Detroit Catholic Central High School's hockey team defeated St. Michael's College School from Toronto in the Basil Bowl with a score of 9-2 on Tuesday, November 14, and 5-3 on Wednesday, November 15.
"It was a great pleasure to participate in the Basil Bowl against St. Michael's this year and continue the tradition of strengthening the bond of brotherhood between Basilian schools," stated Catholic Central's Head Hockey Coach, Brandon Kaleniecki.
The Basil Bowl is a tradition that began in 2014 to connect the students of Basilian schools from different parts of the country. Basil Bowls can include a game or match between any of the school's sporting, academic, and robotics teams.
Recent Basil Bowls have included competitions between CC's hockey, soccer, rugby, and lacrosse teams. In the past, CC's Jazz Band traveled to St. Mike's, playing both together and separately in what was known as the "Basil of the Bands."
Before this year's game, students attended Mass and enjoyed a meal together, allowing them to connect with their Basilian brothers from another school.
Schools that participate in the Basil Bowl take turns traveling to the other school. Last March, Detroit Catholic Central won the Basil Bowl match in rugby against St. Thomas in Houston, Texas.
CC families hosted the opposing team's 30 players and their families from Texas in their homes, where they spent the weekend forming fellowships and participating in friendly competition. The next Basil Bowl will be held in 2024.
