1942 FOOTBALL STATE CHAMPIONS
Under the guidance of legendary Athletic Director Fr. James Martin, CSB and legendary coach John Hackett, this powerhouse CC team went 8-0 for the season. The team was led by seniors Hathaway, Groth, Pirronello, Kelly, Klimavicus, Melia, Haddas, Sinkus, and Yata. The "Big Three" backfield of Tommy Groth, Bill Pirronello, and Frank Gawronski, supported by outstanding line play on both sides of the ball, outscored their opponents 289-20. The season culminated with a convincing 46-0 victory over their arch-rival Public School Champion Hamtramck in the City Championship game. Catholic Central was a consensus State Champion selection by the sports writers of the major newspapers in Michigan.
