Under the direction of Mr. Tony Magni, the 2001 Catholic Central Cross Country Team was among CC’s best, earning the fourth Michigan High School Athletic Association’s (MHSAA) State title in Catholic Central Cross-Country history. Senior captains John Krawiec, Kyle Jekot and Ryan Lowry provided the excellent leadership required in the successful season. Underclassmen Brian Door and David Lucas, along with seniors Matt Esper, Jon Marshall and Brian Seymour, played a strong supporting role for the team’s success. Despite injuries to key runners (John Krawiec was lost to a stress fracture for a good part of the season and Ryan Lowry suffered a broken leg bone) that would have crushed other teams but not these Shamrocks who stepped up to meet the challenge. They raced through an undefeated dual meet season and after finishing third in their first two invitationals, they placed first in the Shamrock Inv., the Haslett Inv., the Sturgis Inv., the Catholic High School League Championship (CHSL) meet, the Operation Friendship meet and the MHSAA Regional meet leading up to the MHSAA State Finals. Saturday November 3, 2001 was their day! Finishing first for the Shamrocks and second overall was senior John Krawiec (All-State). Sophomore David Lucas (All-State), an outstanding runner during the last part of the season, finished sixth. Senior Kyle Jekot was 30th, senior John Marshall, junior Brian Door, senior Bryan Seymour, and senior Matt Esper rounded out the Shamrock varsity. Unable to compete, Ryan Lowry (All-State 2000) provided support from the field as the Shamrocks earned their fourth MHSAA State Championship.
