DAVID JAMES MOSS '00
David Moss had a stellar hockey career. At Catholic Central (CC) he worked his way from the scout tea to All State 1st Team both junior and senior years as well as being named to the All-State Dream Team his senior year. David was an essential contributor on both the 1999 and 2000 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) State Championship teams. He scored important goals in both MHSAA tournaments including a shorthanded goal in the 2000 finals. In his senior year he played 28 games with 18 goals, 20 assists for 38 points.Â
Following high school, David played a season (2000-01) of junior hockey with Cedar Rapids of the United States Hockey League (USHL), scoring 20 goals and 38 points in 51 games. The Calgary Flames selected him in the seventh round of the 2001 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft, 220th overall. Before he entered the pros, he played for the University of Michigan (U of M).Â
Following his 13-point freshman campaign at U of M, Moss scored 32 points in 2002-03 and was named the team's recipient fo the Alton D. Simms Trophy as the Wolverine's most improved player. He was a two-time winner of the Howard Colby Award as Michigan's most sportsmanlike player, in 2002 and 2005. In four (4) full seasons with the Wolverines, Moss recorded 93 points in 163 games and earned a degree in sports management.Â
When the Calgary Flames called him up in 2006, he set a rookie record by scoring goals in his first three games. The Flames honored him in 2009 with the Ralph T. Scurfield Humanitarian Award for his charitable efforts (Juvenile Diabetes and Literacy Initiative). He was ate player who "best exemplified the qualities of perseverance, determination and leadership on the ice."
In 2010 and 2013 he represented Team USA at the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) World Championships netting 10 pts.Â
David ended his NHL career in Phoenix. While injuries affected David's NHL career, he still finished 501 games, 78 goals, 100 assists and 157 penalty minutes. David Moss' highlights include centering Calgary's top line of Jarome Inginla and Alex Tanguary and appearing in three outdoor games: The 2001 Cold War (U of M record crowd 74,544), the IIHFÂ 2010 World Championship (Team USA) and at the 2011 Heritage Classic (Calgary Flames). He retired in 2016, after playing in Europe with the EHC Biel of the Swiss National League A (NLA).
David Moss has been recognized his entire career for his hard work, sportsmanship, and community service. The success of his teammates was always more important than any personal recognition. He is a humble man and a great example of "Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge."Â
