JOHN MCHALE '39
Before he earned fame and recognition as a Major League Baseball executive, John McHale was an All-City and All-State center for Catholic Central's City and State Championship Football Team of 1938. A first-baseman on Fr. Martin's undefeated CC baseball teams of 1937, 1938 and 1939, John continued his athletic endeavors both in football and baseball while attending the University of Notre Dame. Prior to his 1941 collegiate baseball season, John signed a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers, where he played from 1943-1945 and 1947-1948. He was a member of the Detroit Tigers 1945 World Series Championship Team. Upon retiring as a player, John served as General Manager for the Tigers and the Milwaukee Braves. After serving as an aid to the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, he helped Major League Baseball go 'international', becoming the President and General Manager of the Montreal Expos. John is a member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
