BIOGRAPHY
HARRY GROTH '38
The Groth family is legendary in the annals of Catholic Central athletics, a legend that began with Harry Groth in 1936. As a member of the 1936 Shamrock Football Team, Harry led the nation in scoring, with 153 points, including 25 touchdowns. The following season he broke his own record, scoring 29 touchdowns, while rushing for 928 yards. Harry was an All-City and All-State running back in both 1936 and 1937, and was named captain of the All-State Team in 1937. During his nvo years as a starter, Harry was the highest scoring running back in the nation for Class A High School Football. Upon graduation, Harry continued his gridiron greatness at the University of Detroit. In 1952, Fr. Gerard French, CC Athletic Director, retired Harry's #27 football jersey in honor of the Groth Family, regarded at the time as CC's 'greatest football family.' His brothers Tony, Tom and Ray also wore the #27.
