George Kunec is part of a Catholic Central legacy family. He is a third generation CC man as he followed the tradition set by his father George Kunec Sr. ’41 who played on Hall of Fame Coach John Hackett’s undefeated football teams of 1939 thru 1941 and coached football at Catholic Central with Hall of Famers Bill Foley ’42 and Chuck Mc Henry. His Uncle Joe and Cousin Richard also attended CC. George played football all four years (1960 to 1963) as well as freshman basketball, baseball and one year of varsity track.
George established his own legacy by coaching football at Catholic Central for 33 years, 12 years as freshmen head coach and 21 years with the Varsity Football staff. A staff led by CC Hall of Fame Coaches Tom Mach and Rick Coratti, as well as Roy Dudas and Dan Anderson.
George stated:
“I was fortunate and proud to coach with legends Tom Mach and Rick Coratti ’69 for 33 years, we always did things the right way with integrity and professionalism”. Coach Mach commented on George’s contributions to the program: “George Kunec’s love of Catholic Central High School, the students and the game of football are the reasons he was so instrumental in teaching each player to live CCs’ “Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge” in every aspect of their football experience, helping them all become champions.”
Coach Kunec was part of sixteen State Final appearances and nine State Football Championships. In 1995 George was awarded “Assistant Coach of the Year” by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA). In addition to coaching football at CC, George also coached 3 years of JV Lacrosse.
George is a graduate of Western Michigan University and a veteran of Military service with two years in the United States Marine Corp. He retired from Ford Motor Co. as a Supply Chain Manager with 34 years of service. George has been married to his wife Carol for 51 years. They have two sons Brandon and Aaron.
