MICHAEL LEWIS '80
When you talk about outstanding all around three (3) sport athletes at Catholic Central (CC), Mike Lewis is one of the best. He was a three-year Varsity football quarterback/safety, three-year Varsity basketball point guard, three-year Varsity baseball shortstop, and four-year Honor Roll member.
In 1979, Mike was a Varsity Football team captain and team MVP earning All Catholic, All City, All State Dream Team honors, and the Catholic High School League (CHSL) Jon Shada Football Scholar Award while guiding the Shamrocks to the CHSL and MHSAA District, Regional and State Championships, Coach Mach added that: "Mike was a young man of exceptional character, intense competitiveness, and a champion's will to win. These qualities made him a natural leader and his mental toughness kept him competing for championships in three sports."
As captain, Mike played point guard on the 1979-1980 Varsity basketball team, leading them to the CHSL Championship and the MHSAA District and Regional titles, while personally earning All Catholic honors.
In baseball, Mike, a three-year varsity player, was the starting shortstop on the 1979 MHSAA State Championship Shamrock tea. Coach Frank Corej stated that Mike was "a coach's dream... hardworking, attentive, and a leader." Mike Lewis capped his high school career with the prestigious Fr. Whalen Award.
Mike received a Football Scholarship to Easter Michigan University (EMU) where he played all four (4) years, earning Academic All Mid American Conference (MAC) his senior year.
Mike began his coaching career as a member of CC's football staff with three (3) MHSAA State Championship game appearances. He followed his time at CC as defensive coordinator at De La Salle with three (3) more MHSAA Championship game appearances and a state championship title in 2014. In addition to the six (6) championship game appearances, he was part of eight (8) MHSAA regional championship teams.
Mike was Varsity Head Basketball Coach at Royal Oak Kimball High School where he was named the 1995-96 Oakland Country Basketball Coach of the Year.
Mike continued his high level of achievement in is teaching career. He has earned multiple "Teacher of the Year" honors and was named the 1999 State of Michigan Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year.
Mike Lewis is an outstanding example of living the spirit of Catholic Central's "Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge" and deserving of his place in the Catholic Central Athletic Hall of Fame.
