1986 TENNIS STATE CHAMPIONS
They say history repeats itself. Well, onc again it has. For the second year in a row the Catholic Central Tennis Team became the MHSAA State Champions. It was a repeat for the Shamrocks as Coach Garlicki predicted. His confidence was passed along to his players as his Shamrocks systematically picked apart the competition in winning their second straight State Championship in the Midland Community Tennis Center.
It was a full team effort as Catholic Central went undefeated during the first three rounds on Friday in th two-day event. The Shamrocks reached the semi-finals in six (6) of seven (7) flights, scoring 21 of the 24 points needed to win. Sophomore Steve Campbell's state title at No. 3 singles provided the clincher. The number three doubles of senior co-captains, Mark Frederick and Walt Bartels (CHSL Deady Award winner) reached the finals. The number one (1) doubles of juniors Jim Gillespie and Jeff Huston reached the semi-finals. The number two (2) doubles of juniors Randy Janis and Rob Transou also reached the semi-finals. Junior Phil Eagleson the number two (2) singles and the number four (4) singles sophomore Anthony Mikulic also reached the finals. The number one (1) singles player junior Mark Agah reached the quarterfinals.Â
"It was more difficult winning this year because the points were more on target... the weather was not a factor, so everybody played their normal game", said Coach Frank Garlicki. He continued "I could tell right away that our guys were playing to their best performance levels." The dominant repeat MHSAA Division I State Championship effort establishes the 1986 Catholic Central's Tennis team's place of honor in te Catholic Central Athletic Hall of Fame.
