1985 TENNIS STATE CHAMPIONS
"We will win the State Finals in '85" was the statement of Mr. Garlicki to the press after finishing as runner-up (by 1 point) in the '84 MHSAA Finals. Coach "Gar" set out to fulfill his goal with high-caliber players under the leadership of tri-captains Greg Grabowski, Mark Egnatios (All State Selection at #1 Singles) and Bob Heimbuch. Hard work and determination were needed in their quest for a state title. With the help of assistant coaches Tom Kennedy and Fritz Frederick, all the team members could be brought to their potential. When they lost a close match to an archrival 4-3, the Shamrocks were even more determined than ever to come back fighting. The Shamrocks went on to win the MHSAA Regionals and MHSAA State Finals decisively. The weather in Midland was a big factor. The wind blew a judge's stand over which caused competition to be moved indoors. After about a half hour of play, lighting struck an electrical generator at the Midland Community Tennis Center and caused a fire. Play resumed outdoors.
In the finals, Catholic Central had three (3) State Champions: sophomore Mark Agah, the team of Greg Grabowski and Jeff Huston and the team of Jim Gillespie and Steve Campbell. "We got an amazing effort out of everybody. The weather was the hardest factor"... stated Coach Garlicki, "It's a very young, very talented team and we should be for sme time to come..." which was true, the Shamrocks were at the front end of "back to back" State Class "A" Tennis Championships.
