1989 CROSS-COUNTRY STATE CHAMPIONS

Way back in the beginning of August 1989, the Catholic Central (CC) Cross-Country team began their training at the Pinery Provincial Park in Canada (the traditional training site for many CC cross-country teams). Each day the team members would run before breakfast and again before dinner. Most people would not be able to endure this hard training, but the team felt that without the camp, winning the state championship would not come to fruition. The team was led by Head Coach Mr. Tony Magni who earned the honor of being the winningest Michigan cross-country coach of the eighties. Their team motto for the season was "Victory Is Achieved Through Unity". The Shamrocks combined rigorous training and focused determination, as they began their championship season.

The CC harriers, led by Mike Sheridan, cruised through an undefeated dual-meet season and proved to be a top eam in invitationals. They won: the Catholic High School League (CHSL) Sectional and the CHSL Championship. Going into the Michigan High School Athletic Association's (MHSAA) state meet, CC an Ann Arbor Pioneer were tied for the number one boys' cross-country team in Michigan during the eighties. The Shamrocks prevailed winning their third state championship in the eighties. Mike Sheridan (3rd) and Jay Schmanske (13th) earned All-State honors. Rounding out the CC finishers were Chris Antczak (19th), Dave Galvin (23rd), Jon Borke (63rd), Pat Dimmer (88) and Jack Massarello (109) at the MHSAA Championship Class A Meet.
