Four in a row. CC’s outstanding hockey program was the first in Michigan to win four straight Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division I State Championships. The team season record was 21-5-3 and the Shamrocks showed incredible effort, heart and dedication throughout the season and took it all. Senior Jeff Davis added “Our students were a great motivation during the ups and downs of the season and our coaches kept us focused.”
CC Hall of Fame Coach Johnson remembers “being on the bus on I-96 to Flint and we were notified that, due to a power outage, the final was pushed back to Monday. It was a challenge heading home knowing all the emotions would be turned off for 36 hours.” In the championship game the Shamrocks came out determined to prove that they had heart. Although favored, they were not going to take Marquette lightly. Junior Eric Giosa opened the scoring early in the first period. After Marquette tied the score late in the period, sophomore Jeff Prough answered with what proved to be the game winner. Also scoring for CC were junior Brandon Naurato, Prough (his second) and senior Ryan O’Dea. In the penalty filled game, the Shamrock special teams were outstanding. CC scored two power play goals and killed off seven (7) penalties, including a two (2) man advantage for 1:30, in the 5-1 win. Senior tri-captain John Perkovich said, “It was the hardest, yet the greatest, State Title since I’ve been playing,”Sean O’Malley, John Perkovich and sophomore Jim Blanchard earned All-State honors.
