1995 FOOTBALL STATE CHAMPIONS
Head Coach Thomas (Tom) Mach, Defensive coordinator Richard (Rick) Coratti and the entire coaching staff developed one of the greatest football teams in the history Of Catholic (CC). The number-one ranked team in the State was led throughout the season by co-captains Judah May, Steve Mondry, Mike Smiley and John Spolsky.
CC began the year with a victory against Toledo Central Catholic at the Silverdome (Dome), then continued with the pounding of a "favored” Ann Arbor Pioneer. The mighty Shamrocks proceeded on their rampage avenging last year's loss to De La Salle with a 31 to 13 victory.
CC then defeated DePorres enroute to the 51st Annual Boys’ Bowl where, with the help of Eron Kosmowski’s monster 48-yard field goal at the end of regulation, kept CC alive, allowing the Shamrocks to defeat Brother Rice in overtime.
After shutting out Orchard Saint Mary's, U Of D, and destroying the new league member Divine Child, the Shamrocks returned to the Dome for a rematch in the CHSL Championship game against Brother Rice. Playing with greater intensity, CC smashed the warriors with a 17 to 7 victory.
After a two year wait, the Shamrocks returned to the state playoffs. Using the strength of their running game, CC defeated Livonia Stevenson and defending state champion Troy for the regional title. After trouncing Sterling Heights Stevenson in the semifinals, the team met the undefeated Rams of Holt in the state title match. The Shamrocks made sure their opponent's first appearance in the finals was a memorable one with a 24 to nothing victory in front of 17,000 people at the Dome. The teams hard work and dedication proved once again why CC was the number-one team in the State and one of best in teams in the nation. (Spectrum 12/19995)
